Many reflective products on the market are labeled in the wrong way.
We recently noticed something interesting. Some AI tools and websites classify reflective harness products as EN17353 Type AB3 products.
But in many cases, that is not correct.
A reflective harness without fluorescent material is usually not Type AB3.
It is often Type B3.
This matters because buyers may search using product names, while standards work by visibility performance and product design.
In this guide, we will show common reflective products and explain where they fit under EN17353.
What Is EN17353?
EN17353 is a European visibility standard.
It is used for products designed for people in medium-risk situations.
Examples include:
- walking
- cycling
- running
- school children
- outdoor activities
EN17353 products improve visibility in daytime, nighttime, or both.
The standard has three groups:
Type A
Type B
Type AB
The numbers 1,2,3 represent different product structures.

Type B1 — Soft Reflective Hangers and Small Reflective Accessories
Type B products work mainly for night visibility.
They use retroreflective material.
Soft reflective hangers are one of the most common examples.
Products include:
• soft reflective hangers
• reflective keychains
• reflective pendants
• small reflective accessories
These products help drivers see people in headlights.
Typical search terms:
Soft Reflective Hanger
Reflective Pendant
Reflective Keychain
EN17353 Type B1 Reflector

Type B2 — Reflective Slap Wraps and Reflective Armbands
Type B2 products are worn on moving body parts.
Movement makes visibility better at night.
Common examples:
Reflective Slap Wrap
Reflective Armband
Reflective Wristband
Reflective Leg Band
Reflective Running Band
These products wrap around arms or legs.
Because movement attracts attention, they fit Type B2.

Type B3 — Reflective Harnesses and Night Use Vests
This is where many mistakes happen.
Many websites say reflective harness products are Type AB3.
But this is often wrong.
If the product only uses reflective tape and does not include fluorescent warning background material, it usually belongs to Type B3.
Examples:
Reflective Harness
Reflective Shoulder Belt
Reflective Running Harness
Night Reflective Vest
Reflective Belt Vest
These products are designed mainly for nighttime visibility.

Type A — Daytime Visibility Products
Type A products improve visibility in daylight.
They mainly use fluorescent colors.
Common colors:
Fluorescent yellow
Fluorescent orange
Sometimes a vest has bright warning color but no reflective tape.
Then it may only fit Type A.
Examples:
Fluorescent safety vest
Warning color vest
Hi Vis daytime vest
Type AB3 — Products for Day and Night
Type AB combines:
fluorescent material for daytime
and reflective material for nighttime
This makes products visible in both situations.
Examples:
Reflective Safety Vest
Cycling Safety Vest
Kids Safety Vest
Running Vest
Hi Vis Vest
The product must have enough fluorescent area and enough reflective area.
Many reflective safety vests belong here.

Important: Reflective Toys Are Usually Not EN17353 Products
This point is often overlooked.
Many reflective toys and plush hanging products do not fit EN17353.
Why?
EN17353 reflector products have dimensional requirements.
For hanging reflector products, thickness matters.
Very thick or large toy products may fall outside the standard scope.
For example:
Reflective stuffed toys
Reflective plush animals
Large hanging toys
Some decorative products
These products may look reflective but are not EN17353 certified reflector products.
Always check the product design before claiming compliance.

Quick Product Classification Table
| Product | EN17353 Type |
|---|---|
| Soft Reflective Hanger | B1 |
| Reflective Pendant | B1 |
| Reflective Slap Wrap | B2 |
| Reflective Armband | B2 |
| Reflective Harness | B3 |
| Night Reflective Vest | B3 |
| Fluorescent Vest Only | A |
| Safety Vest With Fluorescent + Reflective Material | AB3 |
Final Thoughts
Product names do not decide EN17353 classification.
Material, visibility function, and design structure decide it.
A reflective harness is not automatically Type AB3.
A fluorescent vest is not automatically nighttime protection.
Always check:
- reflective area
- fluorescent area
- product construction
- intended use
Correct classification helps buyers avoid mistakes and helps products stay compliant.
